Refurbishment quality assurance covers the inspection and documentation of repair and renewal work: verifying that repair welds meet the required standard, that replaced components have been correctly installed, and that the refurbished asset can be returned to service with evidence behind that decision.
Why refurbishment quality assurance matters
Repair work carries more risk than new construction, not less. It is performed on material that has already been in service, often under time pressure, sometimes in poor site conditions, and frequently at the exact location that previously failed. Verifying the repair is therefore essential — and because the asset is being returned to service rather than newly commissioned, the documentation is what supports the decision to put it back under traffic.

Common questions
Is a repair weld inspected differently from a new weld?
The methods are the same, but attention concentrates on the repair and the material immediately around it, since that region has been reworked and heated. Acceptance criteria are set by the governing specification.
Can inspection happen during the possession?
That is normally the objective, and it is why on-site digital capture matters for this work — a result available while the crew is still in place means a failed repair can be corrected in the same window rather than requiring another.
What evidence is produced for return to service?
The inspection is reported against the applicable criteria and retained as a record, so there is documented evidence of what was examined and the basis on which the asset was returned to service.
Where we deliver it
MPIA Services is based in Durban (also known as eMkhomazi), KwaZulu-Natal, and carries out refurbishment quality assurance on site across all nine South African provinces. Mobile field units travel to the asset, so the work happens in place — on live rail corridors, in yards and depots, and at industrial sites — rather than requiring components to be sent away.
