New-Build Weld Certification
New-build weld certification is the formal assessment and documentation of welds produced during new construction. Welds are inspected by the applicable NDT method, classified according to the asset owner's specification, and issued as a certificate of conformance recording what was inspected, by whom, against which criteria, and with what result.
Why new-build weld certification matters
On a new asset the certificate is what transfers confidence from the contractor to the owner. Without it there is no record that the welds were ever assessed, which becomes a problem at handover, at audit, and years later if a joint fails and the question of whether it was inspected arises. Certification also creates the baseline against which future inspections are compared, so it has value well beyond the day it is issued.

Common questions
What classifications are used?
Rail weld work is commonly reported using C1, C2 and C3 classifications, with the meaning of each set by the asset owner's specification. The governing specification is confirmed before work begins so reporting matches what the owner requires.
Who can issue a certificate of conformance?
Certification depends on the inspection being carried out and interpreted by appropriately qualified personnel under a recognised certification scheme. Qualification is what makes the certificate meaningful to the party relying on it.
How long should certificates be retained?
Retention is normally driven by the asset's design life and the owner's document control requirements, since a certificate may need to be produced many years later. Records are held digitally so an individual weld can be retrieved by job and joint reference.
