South Africa's rail maintenance backlog is an inspection problem too

Transnet has publicly stated that addressing the maintenance backlog on South Africa's freight-rail network requires roughly R50 billion over five years. Behind that number sits a decade of deferred renewal, compounded by a reported 179% rise in security-related incidents and a 1,067% rise in cable theft over five years — losses that pulled maintenance budget away from the track itself. The recovery is real: joint industry initiatives lifted freight volumes to an annualised 161 million tonnes by March 2025. But recovering a network at speed creates its own engineering risk, and that risk concentrates at the welds.
Why accelerated renewal concentrates risk at the weld
Every kilometre of re-railing, every turnout replacement and every closure weld adds new aluminothermic joints to the network — each one a casting made in the field, in variable conditions, often under time pressure. A weld that enters service with internal porosity, a shrinkage cavity or lack of fusion carries that defect under every axle that follows. When renewal volumes surge, the number of new welds surges with them, and so does the consequence of skipping or compressing inspection. The November 2022 derailment that forced Transnet to declare force majeure — closing lines from 8 to 25 November — is a reminder of what a single track failure costs the whole logistics chain.
Inspection as the gatekeeper, not the bottleneck
The tension on every recovery programme is speed versus assurance. The answer is not less inspection but faster feedback: radiographic testing of new welds with results available on site, so a failed joint is cut out and re-welded inside the same possession rather than discovered after the line reopens. Digital capture makes the inspection record immediate and permanent — which matters years later, when a weld is queried and the question becomes whether it was ever examined at all.
