Wheelset Inspection
A wheelset is the axle and its two wheels, and it is among the most safety-critical assemblies on any rail vehicle. Magnetic particle inspection is applied to the axle body, journals, seats, wheel flanges and treads to find fatigue cracking at the surface, typically while the wheelset is out of the vehicle during overhaul.
Why wheelset inspection matters
A wheelset carries the full weight of the vehicle and its load through a small contact patch, under continuous rotating-bending stress. Axle fatigue failures are among the most serious mechanical failures possible on a railway, and they begin as small surface cracks at points of stress concentration. Because the consequences of failure are severe and the crack is detectable long before fracture, inspection at overhaul is standard practice throughout the industry.

Common questions
Does the wheelset need to be removed from the vehicle?
For full examination, yes — inspection is normally done with the wheelset out during overhaul, so the axle body, seats and journals are all accessible. Specific accessible areas can be examined in situ where a targeted check is required.
What happens if a crack is found?
The indication is recorded with its position and extent and reported against the applicable acceptance criteria, which determine whether the component is repairable, must be scrapped, or may return to service.
Is the whole wheelset inspected or only parts of it?
Scope is set by the maintenance specification. It typically concentrates on the areas where fatigue initiates — section changes, seats and radii — rather than treating every surface as equally at risk.
