Rail Running Surface Inspection

The running surface is the crown of the rail where the wheel makes contact. Repeated wheel loading work-hardens and eventually damages this zone, producing rolling contact fatigue that begins at or just below the surface and grows downward into the rail head. Ultrasonic testing introduces high-frequency sound into the rail and measures the echoes returned by internal discontinuities, mapping damage that is invisible from above.

Why rail running surface inspection matters

Rolling contact fatigue is progressive. A defect that starts as fine surface checking can turn down into the rail head and develop into a transverse crack, which is a precursor to a broken rail under traffic. Because the damage develops below the surface, visual inspection alone gives a misleading picture — a rail can look serviceable while carrying a defect that is close to failure. Periodic ultrasonic inspection turns rail replacement into a planned maintenance decision rather than an emergency response.

Common questions

How does this differ from visual inspection of the rail?

Visual inspection shows only what has reached the surface. Ultrasonic testing measures into the depth of the rail head, so it identifies defects that have grown internally and sizes damage that is only faintly visible from above.

Does the track have to be closed?

Inspection is carried out under whatever protection arrangement the operator requires, planned around traffic. The work itself is non-destructive and leaves the rail in service if the results are acceptable.

How often should running surface inspection be done?

Interval is normally driven by accumulated tonnage, track geometry and the defect history of the section, and is set by the asset owner's maintenance regime rather than by a fixed calendar period.
