Component Quality Control

Used as a production quality control step, penetrant testing screens finished or part-finished components for surface-breaking defects before they progress. It is applied after machining, welding, grinding or heat treatment — the operations most likely to introduce or open up surface cracking — and can be run over batches at a practical rate.

Why component quality control matters

The cost of a defective component rises sharply the further it travels. Found at manufacture, a cracked part is scrapped or reworked cheaply. Found after assembly, it takes the assembly with it. Found in service, it can take the machine and the production it was supporting. Inspecting at the point of manufacture is a straightforward economic decision as much as a technical one, and it produces documentary evidence of quality to accompany the part.

Common questions

Can whole batches be inspected, or only samples?

Either. The specification decides — critical components are often inspected in full, while lower-criticality parts may be sampled to an agreed plan.

Does inspection leave the component fit for use?

Yes. The method is non-destructive; the component is cleaned afterwards and is unaffected by having been inspected.

What documentation comes with the inspection?

Results are reported against the acceptance criteria in force, so the record can accompany the component as evidence that it was examined and to what standard.

Where we deliver it

MPIA Services is based in Durban (also known as eMkhomazi), KwaZulu-Natal, and carries out component quality control on site across all nine South African provinces. Mobile field units travel to the asset, so the work happens in place — on live rail corridors, in yards and depots, and at industrial sites — rather than requiring components to be sent away.
